Blogger doesn't seem to like my openid setup and Birder Hyde doesn't have a name/url option, so posting here.

No experience with Arctic either, but if I saw something like this in Massachusetts, I'd be very excited. Main points would be neck pattern and flanks. The back seems a little dark/smooth for a juv Common as well.

@Jason: thanks for your input! Yes, you are right, I can't really be sure about the age, the pics aren't sufficently sharp.
My problem is that it does seem to show charactersa of both Arctic and Common Loon. Even though the field marks for Arctic outweigh (in numbers) the ones for Common, it seems the pattern on the nape is a very strong argument for Common.
A stalemate, and that is something I do not enjoy encountering on a bird...
